Partial List of People to Bleach by Gary Lutz

If you do a lot of crosswords, you may be familiar with crosswordese. Words you cannot quite confirm are real words, but seem to make logical sense when you sound them out.

Gary Lutz does this on another level. He manages to invent words in such a way that the moment you have read them you are certain you have never come across them before, but instantly understand them and believe in them.

This collection of (some very) short fiction blew my mind the first time I read it. Every five years or so I seem to be struck by an author’s ability to redefine my understanding of what is possible in a book. His understanding and use of language is so razor sharp that the brevity of each story feels no less emotional than full length novels I have also enjoyed.

I came across this book creeping someone’s profile on Goodreads after they had written a review of a book that seemed to parallel my feelings of that book almost perfectly. Book soulmates rule.
